Our History
Based in Rutherford, NJ, SDM was established in 1994, and has served the dental industry in the United States and Canada as the leading provider of qualitative and quantitative research services for dental product manufacturers and distributors.
SDM captures actual monthly sales and units sold data from dental product distributors and direct sellers and has been recognized for its publication of its Dental Products Market Share Studies (DPMSS), which analyzes revenue/revenue growth, unit sold/unit growth, average price/price change, and market share for nearly all dental product manufacturers and dental brands in the United States.
In February 2019, SDM merged with Northcoast Data Analytics to form SDM Northcoast, significantly expanding the company’s data network and its data analytics capabilities. With new data provider additions, SDM Northcoast believes it can now accurately report actual monthly dental sales, units and market share information on more than 90% of all dental consumable transactions sold through distribution in the United States.
Since the merger, SDM Northcoast has launched a new web portal called SDM Analytics to make it very easy for customers and data providers to ask questions about specific dental industry data trends and create charts, graphs, and dashboards of information that automatically update each month as new data arrives in the customer’s customized data portal.
SDM Northcoast also has a seasoned team of professional dental industry analysts that use a proprietary methodology to forecast future dental industry growth rates and publish a wide variety of other monthly and quarterly dental industry reports for customers using SDM Northcoast data. Additionally, SDM Northcoast analysts work directly with customers in a consulting role to help dental product manufacturers use data to find opportunities to accelerate business growth rates.
In 2021, SDM Northcoast signed an agreement to become the exclusive data provider to the Dental Trade Alliance as the only source in the United States for accurate dental industry growth and market share information. In 2023, SDM Northcoast signed an agreement with the Dental Industry Association of Canada (DiAC) to be the exclusive data provider to DiAC in Canada as the only source for accurate dental industry growth and market share information in the Canadian dental market.
